I changed the transmission filter. and transmission oil the other day and it did not want to shift into higher gear. As you say its under the bonnet, i would first disconnect the gearshift cables and work the selector mechanism by hand. by doing this you can check for smooth operation of each gear selection and fully inspect the mechanism for any faults, causing a rattle. it could be possible for an internal fault in the gearbox, but this will be picked up
