[news] Friday 7th June 2019 I "think" the 1.2tsi engine in these are not too bad. I believe the problems were with the older twin charged 1.2tsi engine. The newer ones are alloy block, not iron

I accept. collected my mk3 1.2 Tsi 110bhp manual hatch today,my Octavia mk2 vrs going in p/x. As my annual mileage has decreased to around 5000 miles per year it seemed sensible to go for a petrol this time.Very surprised by the power this little 1.2 unit churns out,Just wondered if there are any other mem

The more efficient three-cylinder 1.0 TSI or turbo-petrol developing 115hp is earmarked for the next Gen Sedans ( Vento and Rapid). The current four-cylinder 1.2 TSI will also make way for this engine. The 1.5l diesel engine will exit with no replacement as of now. Link
This engine has a good reputation for reliability but it is a bit early to know of long term issues. Sounds nicer too and I have one of each on the drive. Sad thing is the 1.2TSi 16V engine will have a very short run as it's being replaced by a 1.0 3 cylinder TSi Lee. Edited 17 October, 2016 by logiclee
Available in three variants – Comfortline, Trendline, and Highline, the version which we tested; the Highline, gets a turbocharged 1.2-litre TSI engine paired to a 7-speed dual clutch DSG automatic transmission, while the remaining two variants will continue to use the 1.6-litre naturally aspirated MPI engine and 6-speed torque converter For your budget you should be able to find a Golf with the bigger 1.4 TSI engine, which would be a good choice, or alternatively you could look at the Ford Focus with the 125PS EcoBoost engine, or the SEAT Leon also with the 1.4 TSI engine. All of these options will have useful extra performance over the 1.2 TSI.
The early 1.4 TSi engines don't have a great reputation but it's rarely the turbo itself that fails, in fact VW are pretty good regards turbo reliability, the 1.9 TDi's being the perfect example. These can run to more than 500k with care.

The 1.4-litre TSI engine is generally regarded as being a reliable unit, but with this particular example the service history is crucial. A high mileage such as this is not necessarily a bad thing if the car has been well maintained, and it is also likely that it will have included a lot of motorway miles which is usually undemanding for a car's mechanicals.
