The exterior facade of the Continental was filmed at the flatiron-shaped Beaver Building at 1 Wall Street Court, in the Financial District of Manhattan. Until 2020, instead of Charon, the concierge (played by Lance Reddick, who passed away in 2023), you'd have found the Japanese restaurant Haru Sushi.

Dresden, another German town, was also used as a filming location for The Grand Budapest Hotel. The city’s Zwinger Palace was used as the exterior for the film’s fictional Grand Budapest Hotel, while the interior was shot on a soundstage in Berlin. The city’s historic streets and buildings also served as additional backdrops for the film.

With “The Grand Budapest Hotel” (Oscar-nominated for best cinematography), Mr. Yeoman and Mr. Anderson took the visuals a level further, shooting in multiple aspect ratios for the different time periods in which the film takes place.
